Meat Pie

Ingredients for Filling:

3 lbs ground pork (ground once)
3 lbs ground beef
5 medium onions
1 small bottle sage
3-4 C mashed potatoes
5 slices of bread torn into pieces

Ingredients for Phyllo Dough:

2 C melted crisco (butter flavored)
2 C water
salt
1/4 t baking soda
3 C flour

Make mashed potatoes

Directions for Filling:

Use a large pot on the stove and add the meat broken up to the pan with the onions and sage, and cover with water about an inch or two above the ingredients. Bring to a boil and cook until meat is done. Slowly fold in the mashed potatoes. Add the bread pieces to the pot to absorb all the excess water.

Directions for Dough:

Blend all dough ingredients in a bowl. Chill for 2 hours or more.
Divide dough into 6 equal parts. Each part will make a two crust pie.

Roll dough thin, it is gooey so you must constantly add flour to allow the dough to roll large enough for a bottom and top pie crust.

Add enough meat mixture to the pies and cover with a top crust.

Bake at 375 degrees until just lightly brown.

These freeze wonderfully. We would use 2-3 each Christmas Eve for dinner with the Veggie Rice side dish and marinated carrots. The rest we would cover with foil and freeze for New Years day or another Sunday dinner.
